Stop Trapping on National Wildlife Refuges!
Hunting is actually allowed and even promoted by the US Fish & Wildlife Service on many refuges within the National Wildlife Refuge System.Â
Trapping is even allowed. Â
U.S. Rep. Nita Lowey (D-NY) is taking steps to stop that, the trapping at least. Her bill, H.R.3710 would amend the National Wildlife Refuge System Administration Act of 1966, 16 U.S.C. 668dd et seq., and make it illegal for anyone to possess or use a body gripping trap while at a wildlife refuge.Â
A "body-gripping trap" includes leghold traps, kill-type traps, snares and any modifications of those as well as any other "device that is intended to kill or capture wildlife by physically restraining any part of the animal". Only cage or box traps or suitcase type live beaver traps would be excluded.
A first offense could mean a fine up to $500 for each trap found. Subsequent offenses could mean up to $1000 and 180 days in jail. Violators would forfeit the traps and any animals caught.
WHAT YOU CAN DOÂ
The bill has been assigned to the Natural Resources Committee's Subcommittee on Insular Affairs, Oceans and Wildlife.  Contact committee members and urge them to stop the cruelty and vote yes on H.R. 3710.
Though the bill was only introduced last month in October, 2009, it already has dozens of co-sponsors.  Go here to find out if your U.S. representative is a co-sponsor!   Â
If your representative is not a co-sponsor, write and urge him or her to stop the cruelty and support a ban on traps in national wildlife refuges, H.R. 3710.

The Fish & Wildlife Agency is national disgrace
Why are the agencies that are supposed to protect animals the ones who are killing them ? All the those not protecting our wildlife should be fired and prosecuted.
