China Bans Animal Performances at Zoos and Parks

The Chinese Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development has issued a regulation requiring all animal performances at zoos and animal parks to end within 3 months.

The government is concerned that zoos and animal parks pursue profit at the expense of humane treatment of the animals. The government hopes the measure will encourage zoos to return to a non-profit status.There are also concerns about danger to the public from animals forced to perform.Â

Signs announcing the cull have been taken down.Â

The Anti Fur Society is going head to head with the Mexican government in an all out bid to stop horse slaughter in that country. Now that horse slaughter in the U.S. has been shut down, horses are transported on long arduous journeys to Mexican horse slaughterhouses, most notably San Bernabe in the city of Almoloya de Juarez.

Canadian Government Silencing Critics of the Seal Hunt?

Â Though the Canadian government seems oblivious to the cruelty of the continuing seal hunt, it has decided to put on trial five critics.Â

Beginning this week 2 Canadians, 2 Americans and 1 Briton will face charged in Isles de la Madeleine in Quebec for coming within 10 meters of seal hunters, a violation of federal regulations concerning marine mammals.

Original report: New South Wales in Australia may ban sales of cats and dogs from pet stores. It wouldn't be the first place to do so. Both Belgium and Croatia recently banned such sales.
