Horse Slaughter is only from the greed of mankind, and I don't believe that man should be the top of the food chain. I believe in evolution- therefore animals have come before man. Nobody wants to get eaten, but neither do the animals -in this case, horses- and that is where the balance of becoming a vegetarian comes in. We can all live peacefully if the slaughter houses are prevented as well as hunting. Human consumption can most certainly live without meat. Horses have done so much for mankind- it's time to give back by letting them be free of cruelty and giving them loving care, not neglect. It is extremely unfair for ANY ANIMAL to be euthanized, gassed, shot, etc., without any voice of their own to be put in. Well, They don't have voices mankind can comprehend. Therefore, they should always be unbothered by the selfishness of mankind. Is it not true that you cannot be convicted unless you admit the case or are caught doing said crime? Well, animal does not speak of crime, nor commits. This is also to be put into thought when a dog bites a young child, for example. This usually comes from the owners fault- therefore not being the animals fault and they should not be euthanized for it. We can stop horse slaughter and come up with solutions such as having the government or owners supply grazing land by higher taxes (of course nobody wants higher taxes so we will usethis as a last resort). Maybe we can STOP BUILDING and start CONSERVING our land for horses and cattle to graze on. Maybe Highschool students looking for communtiy service hours could go out and take care of the horses and make sure they have enough water. Some private donations by organized charities can be made. It is a thumbs up for them to have the extra land becasue they can take care of the growth by having the horses eat it. We need to make solutions to BAN HORSE SLAUGHTER! Actually, now that horse slaughter is banned in the US, many horse owners are struggling with dead/dying animals. The problem - sure you can have a horse humanely euthanized at your farm. But, what do you do with the body? Horses are big, and most places have restrictions on just burying carcasses - too much chance of contaminating the ground water. Where before the horses could at least be disposed of, now there is nowhere to dispose of a horse carcass easily and legally.
As for everyone being vegetarian, I for one am allergic to broccoli, cauliflower, and all shell beans. I could never get all the nutrients I need from a completely vegetarian diet.
Frankly, saying everyone MUST be a vegetarian for the good of the animals is the equivalent of saying that everyone MUST be *insert your least favorite religion here* for the good of the world.
If you don't believe owning and caring for and loving animals is worthwhile, then don't do it. But please don't think that is the proper answer for everyone.

don't deserve to be cruelly butchered to end up on the dinner plates in foreign countries. We
do NOT breed horses in America for food. Most of the horses that go to slaughter are young
and healthy....that is the way they want the meat tasty and tender. It is a myth that unwanted
horses go to slaughter. This horrific cruelty needs to stop. We as humans are supposed to have
compassion and should not turture animals to death. If a horse is sick, injured or is so old
that it has no quality of life then it should be put down humanely by a veterinarian just like
it is done with dogs and cats. I'm sure that there are humane organizations that would help with
the cost by offering low cost programs. It is done for dogs and cats and it is done for horses also.
There are good people all over America that care about the horses and give their timeand money to help
these wonderful animals. This myth about he unwamted horses is being voised by those who make money
from selling these beautiful animals to be butchered. It is all about the money and it is all
so very cruel.

How many of these unwanted horses do you actually own and pay to support in this time when grain/hay and everything else is going out of sight? I personally have at least 10 unrideable horses that others have disposed of, and that was to save them from going to slaughter.
That said, I wholeheartedly support slaughter, as there are enough losers out there who will not pay the 100-150 to have a horse euthanized, instead, they'd just as soon see their animal slowly wasting away with no food in their pasture -- now you tell me what is more cruel, a stun gun or weeks and weeks of starvation without shelter?
I say all the bleeding hearts out there acquire a few of these unwanted animals, and go to work every day to support these animals in these times, and then come back and re-evaluate their feelings about slaughter.
OK, that was the first point.... NOW, I want all the idealists out there, who probably don't even own a 'discard' (much less 10) horse, to tell me what they think is happening to the multitude of horses that is selling for 50-150 range at auctions every single day in the US, where currently they cannot be slaughtered. Are they not being slaughtered? If you believe that, we need to talk about some swamp land I've got for sale.... NO, these horses are now being shipped to MEXICO, where they have to endure a much longer ride, only to find themselves at a slaughter house where there are no regulations as to what is humane slaughter, being stabbed in the back of the neck multiple times until Jose finally finds the spinal cord and severs it -- when he does, all that does to them is paralyze them, they are still totally with it while their neck is slit, and they slowly bleed to death. Hence, I salute all of your blind and idealistic efforts to ban slaughter in the US, because by doing so you are multiplying the horses' misery greatly, leaving them either to rot out in someone's pasture or take the long miserable trip to Mexico to be slaughtered with no rules! Now, is slaughter in the US really so bad of an option?
