Update March 13, 2008: There are rumblings that Macon Animal Control is demanding a $100,000 increase in its budget if the city stops using the gas chamber in favor of lethal injection. The money is demanded for additional staff to administer the lethal injections. One employee who asked not to be identified, said the money was also for additional space, a euthanasia room.

Illinois Moves to Ban Animal Gas Chambers: You Can Help Pass this Legislation!

A proposed Illinois law would ban animal gas chambers in the state. The bill, H.B. 4844, introduced by Rep. John A. Fritchey, would make use of the gas chamber to kill animals a Class A misdemeanor on the first offense and a Class 4 felony for subsequent violations.

You Can Help Stop the Use of Gas Chambers in Spalding County, GA!

There is a small, grass-roots campaign happening to stop the use of the gas chamber in Spalding County, Georgia. Please write a letter to each of the five commissioners as well as to the county manager. (These folks do not have email . Letters must be sent via U.S. mail.) Ask them to stop the use of the gas chamber. Feel free to use the sample letter below. A copy is attached to this article that you can download. Whatever you write, please be polite.

In March, 2007 Chesley Morton and Jennifer Robinson filed suit in Fulton County, Georgia Superior Court, claiming the state Department of Agriculture and its Commissioner, Tommy Irvin, have long violated state law. They alleged violation? The state Department of Agriculture and Irvin condone the use of gas chambers to kill animals in public shelters.

Journal of the American Medical Association Study: Carbon Monoxide Poisoning Can Cause Heart Damage

A recent study suggests carbon monoxide poisoning is harmful in ways no one suspected until now.

Carbon monoxide poisoning can result from exposure to the gas in a confined space such as operation of an animal gas chamber.

Carbon monoxide causes light-headedness and nausea and even unconsciousness.

Significantly, according to a recent study in the Journal of the American Medical Association, severe poisoning can also damage the heart.

Researchers looked at 230 patients with moderate to severe carbon monoxide poisoning.

Gas Chambers: A History and Overview

by Denise LeBeau

Many tax-funded animal shelters still use carbon monoxide gas chambers to kill unwanted cats and dogs.

This method is considered by many to be outdated and inhumane. Your taxes are funding It!
