Take the Poll on Whether the UK Should Ban Rottweilers
The United Kingdom may be contemplating a ban on rottweilers.
Click on the question below to take the poll:
- The United Kingdom currently bans the following including mixes and dogs with the behavioral and physical characteristics of these breeds: pit bull terrier (this means any pit bull type dog), Japanese tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brazileria. It is up to the owner to prove the dog is not prohibited. Ultimately, it is up to the court to decide whether a dog is one of the banned types.
Curiously, the latter 3 breeds were not really known in the UK before their ban following the passage of the Dangerous Dogs Act of 1991.
Under that law the Secretary of State can also ban any dog bred for fighting or which is of a "type bred for" fighting. Dogs may be exempted by court order and added to the Index of Exempted Dogs.
To exempt a dog, whether it is a banned breed or a dog that has been seized in violation of the Act, a court must find the dog is not a danger to the public or other animals and the owner must have the dog neutered, micro-chipped, tattooed, and on a leash and muzzle in public; the owner typically must have the requisite liability insurance in the event of claims for injuries caused by the dog.
The Secretary can impose restrictions such as leashing and muzzling on any other dogs deemed to present a serious danger to the public.
In acting on a complaint that a dog is dangerous or not kept under proper control, certain restrictions for the dog can be ordered including neutering.

rottweiler's are as good as they are taught
As the guardian of a sweet rottie, two bully mixes and a dalmatian and someone who volunteers time at a large volume animal shelter that sees more than its fair share of rotties, pits and large breeds I am always amazed at the stupidity of the media. Ban bad owners not dogs.
I hate having to explain to people that my dogs are nice simply because misinformed people see what breed they are and hear negative comments by uninformed media outlets. Give me a rottie or a pit bull any day of the week over most breeds.
I was bitten by a beagle a few years ago should we ban Snoopy. I was also bitten as a child by a collie, should we ban Lassie....please wake up and see bad ownership. Abuse, lack of proper training and socialization make bad dogs. No dog regardless of breed should ever be left unsupervised with young children for both the child and dog's sake.
There are very few unsound dogs before man gets a hold of them.
Rotties--breed ban
151 people were killed in their bath tubs last year. Should we ban those too?
The odds are much greater of you dying at home while bathing, than walking in your neighborhood and being attacked by a dog, and those odds are even lower if you pick a specific breed.
Little dogs bite more than big dogs--most of those bites just aren't recorded.
Most dogs that bite were chained. Outlaw the chaining, and the odds decrease significantly.
Its kinda like birth control prevents the need for an abortion.
