PA Gas Chamber Ban Unlikely to Pass

Update January 27, 2012: Once again Pennsylvania legislators have failed to pass a bill that would ban archaic animal gas chambers still used to kill shelter animals in the state. S.B. 1329, the latest effort to stop the use of gas chambers to kill shelter animals, has been re-referred to the Senate Appropriations Committee where some observers say it is likely to die.

Update Aug. 10, 2011: Last night at least 200 people packed the Davidson County, North Carolina County Council meeting room to try to convince commissioners to abandon the archaic carbon monoxide gas chambers still used to kill shelter animals.

A motion to do just that was filed by Commissioner Cathy Dunn, but no other commissioner seconded it. A number of residents spoke in favor of the motion.

AVMA to Condemn Gas Chambers for "Routine Euthanasia" of Dogs and Cats?


AVMA insigniaThough the fine print of the American Veterinary Medical Association's current and past Euthanasia Reports contain strong evidence of the cruelty and danger of carbon monoxide gas chambers used to kill shelter animals, the AVMA has continued to insist such use of the medieval devices is "acceptable".

Update June 4, 2011: S.B. 172/H.B. 147 has passed the Alabama state senate unanimously! The bill previously passed the state House of Representatives and now goes to Gov. Robert Bentley for his signature, after which "within 30 days after January 1, 2012, any gas chambers  operated prior to that date shall have been dismantled and been removed, and provide documentation to that effect."

Call On The AVMA To Condemn The Use Of Animal Gas Chambers

Despite its own warnings and criticism about animal carbon monoxide gas chambers, the AVMA still finds their use acceptable. The 2007 American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) policy report on animal euthanasia (attached below) states carbon monoxide gas chambers are an acceptable method of killing animals.
