I had a dog friend for almost 15 yrs who was more than a "pet" and I wish I could have had him with me for the rest of my life... If possible I would have cloned him and had another "Step" forever... Maybe that's sellfish of me, but it seems there are few animals in each person's life who truly transcend being "dog and owner" – and I miss my friend every day.
That said, I don't think pet-cloning should be done on a commercial level for many of the negatives listed in survey. It would be my personal choice to continue having a puppy like my old dog but I wuoldn't even consider cloning for any other reason. Too many boutique animals out there and too many unwanted ones.
I won't go to a shelter or ranch or whatever looking for another dog, that's for sure. It will be a long time before I take on that responsibility again. It will have to be serendipitous.
The animal will not be the same even if you clone him and it is not fair to that animal to compare him! There is a lady who had 6 clones done of her pitbull and is only keeping one... There are many purebred rescues for all breeds, and also purebreds in shelters if you have to have a purebred. Petfinder.com is a wonderful site and you can find any animal near you. Cloning will eventually lead to mass producing dogs and cats for food... and fur..
