Help Make Sure Veterinarian Dr. William Baber Does Not Hurt Another Animal
Sumner County, Tennessee's Assistant District Attorney General, Thomas Dean, has stepped up to charge veterinarian William Baber with 12 misdemeanors arising out of his use of the heartstick method to kill animals in the county shelter.
Tennessee's Non-livestock Animal Humane Death Act allows the heartstick method of euthanasia but only "if performed on heavily sedated, anesthetized or comatose animals". Tenn. Code Ann. § 44-17-303 The 2000 American Veterinary Medical Association report on euthanasia contains this same requirement for intracardial injections.
Dr. Baber with the assistance of shelter staff simply allegedly held the conscious animals up and stabbed them with the heartstick, letting the animals scream and flop or run around in great pain and fear for up to 30 minutes before finally dying. If the animals were not still enough for him to stab them in the heart, Baber reportedly stepped on their heads to hold them in place.
The heartstick method, when done illegally without sedation or anesthesia, is faster and allowed him to kill more animals. By using this method instead of the preferred intravenous injection, it is reported Baber earned $25,000 last year for killing almost 3,000 dogs and cats. After first temporarily suspending him, then reinstating him, following a December 14, 2007 hearing, the Tennessee Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners suspended Baber for four months and fined him $2,000 and placed him on 5 years probation. It is a violation of the Tennessee code of professional conduct to perform euthanasias in violation of the Tennessee's Non-livestock Animal Humane Death Act. Tenn. Comp. R. & Regs. R. 1730-1-.13
It is not clear why if he earned $25,000 illegally torturing and killing dogs and cats, his fine is so low. Also, the Board will meet in April, 2008 to decide if Dr. Baber's license should be permanently revoked. Contact the Tennessee Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners and urge them to revoke Dr. Baber's license to practice veterinary medicine.

The first hearing on the misdemeanor charges is January 16, 2008. Urge District Attorney Ray Whitley to seek the maximum sentences on these charges which are: 2 counts of violations of Tennessee's Non-livestock Animal Humane Death Act, 4 counts of animal cruelty to dogs and cats, 4 counts of failing to verify deaths of dogs and cats, and 2 counts of falsifying government records.

Baber could receive up to 11 months 29 days in jail on each count.
Baber's defense? He claims he didn't know that law changed in 1982 to prohibit heartstick without sedation or anesthesia. Yeah, right.
The Tennessee Vet Board Gave Evil Vet Baber his License Back
In late April of this year, the Tennessee Vet Board gave Baber his license back.

Inhumane euthanasia condoned in New Hampshire
On October 18,2006 my elderly dying dog was euthanized in my arms via intravenous injection of potassium chloride as the sole chemical agent to end her life. This was without informed consent, warning, and without compassion. Why did this happen? Why does the state of NH allow NON- DEA schedule 11 licensed clinics to do this? This goes unacknowledged yet known for over a decade in this state.

I'm in Worthington, Ohio. A vet here killed my precious healthy happy sweet little boy cat - the vet admitted it. I have come to the conclusion many vets kill pets. I will NEVER trust a vet again. BEWARE OF VETS.

Please revoke Dr. Baber's license. Animals who have to die in shelters already suffer such indignities, they do not deserve to die like this. Society has already failed them, and if Dr. Baber is allowed to continue to practice, the courts will have failed them too.

This is barbaric, without morals and what is a person like this doing calling himself a veterinarian? This is without any doubt some of the most torturous killings we have heard in a long time. I have never heard that a vet ever used something like this, which makes this even more evil.
I can't bear to think that these poor creatures first off were thrown out by the very people that say they care for them, and then to have them end up on a place like this. To then be tortured before they are then killed.
The animal is the one that walks on two feet. It is getting way to easy to just kill and that is the only thing man knows how to do. If something isn't quite right, then we must kill it.
I can hope that this man gets no worse or better than he gave! If not here, then when he dies!
